Blacksmiths drills are generally what would be considered to be "oversize" drills.
These are very useful when you need to put larger holes in metal than the size of the chuck will normally allow.
It is important to remember that the rotational torque increases quite significantly with the larger diameter drill bit therefore it is important to ensure your drill has sufficient power to enable the drill bit to work.  It is advisable to calculate the correct rotational speed for the drill and the material type being machined, drop the speed lower rather than going higher.
