Multi-Stage Gas Pressure Reducing Regulators – Or Multi-stage Regs.

When it comes to multi-stage regulators size isn’t everything. 

The old large bodied GCE manufactured multi-stage regulator (what was the BOC Saffire regulator when BOC owned the factory)  has been replaced with a new modern more compact multi-stage regulator which provides greatly improved performance, in terms of higher flow rate at an even better / flatter output pressure which is what is required for modern engineering use.

What this means for the user is a higher flow rate for a specific pressure drop plus more consistent pressure being maintained at the pressure the user requires.   The only trade off with the smaller second stage diaphragm has been the minute adjustment of pressure is less accurate, but a feature which is no longer required.

In todays engineering environment minute adjustment of pressure is not a priority.   When the original multi-stage regulators were designed MIG welding and TIG welding didn’t exist, all the welding, brazing, soldering – joining  - was carried out with oxy / acetylene and just as artisans may today weld for several minutes continuously, or even longer periods, so it was that gas welding was also carried out for longer periods – the multi-stage regulator allowed for consistent flame cone characteristics which is vital for consistent fusion welding as well as brazing.  The old 1950’s design of multi-stage regulator was an update on the earlier versions but had pretty much remained unchanged, yes encapsulated valves were added but this was about reducing production problems and improving quality rather than boosting performance. 

The new multi-stage regulator manufactured by GCE in Europe – designated “Pro-Stage” - has been a complete redesign to improve regulator performance and further improve product reliability.  The new Pro-Stage regulator meets the demands of todays engineering environment, the higher flow rate and flatter flow curve with less pressure drop ensures the regulators are able to undertake all normal tasks in addition to which the improved performance makes these new  regulators ideal for applications such as high speed machine cutting – high speed cutting nozzles require consistent high pressure oxygen at the correct flow rate so as to gain the design characteristic high velocity cutting oxygen stream, which enables the faster cutting.  The lower pressure heating oxygen also benefits from the improved pressure consistency because the pre-heat flame setting will remain focused as set which is important for the ignition “spot” maintenance.

Simple applications such as heating, welding and brazing are of course easily carried out with the new design of regulator, the improved performance benefitting these applications when operated for extended periods.
