Type 5 Shank - Excalibur Multi-Purpose Type 3 or Type 5 Aluminium Shank.
Full size comfortable grip, Type 3 / 5 aluminium shank designed to take on all applications with ease.
Applications such as:- Fusion welding 0,6 to 25+mm / Brazing / Silver soldering all with Oxy / acetylene, or if you don't have the rent free acetylene or industrial acetylene available then we have nozzle options for brazing and silver soldering with oxy / propane,
Note - Safe Use of Acetylene
The HobbyWeld rent free acetylene cylinder may be used with the following welding nozzle sizes::-
HW Original 800L DA cylinder Swaged Type 5 #1, #2, #3 & #5
HW Plus 1770L DA cylinder Swaged Type 5 #1, #2, #3, #5, #7, #10 & #13
HW Ultra 2550L DA cylinder Swaged Type 5 #1, #2, #3, #5, #7, #10, #13 & #18.
For welding or heating with nozzle sizes #25 & #35 these need to be supplied from a single full size industrial DA cylinder as a minimum.
The larger nozzle sizes which only fit to the heavy duty acetylene mixer will require a minimum of two or three full size industrial DA cylinders (DA = Dissolved Acetylene).
Swaged Type 5 sizes #45, #55, #70 & #90.#
There is no substitute for Acetylene and no alternative fuel gas. Oxy / acetylene may be set with a neutral flame condition which allows the fusion welding of steel, aluminium and stainless steel (flux required). Other fuel gases result in an oxidising flame which means they cannot be used for fusion welding - the result is a brittle weld.
Type 5 Cutting Applications
Fitting the nozzle mix cutting attachment enables you to cut mild steel from 0.8 to 150mm with any of the different fuel gases available, so long as you have the correct nozzle type. The most common cutting nozzles being the ANM-6 and the PNM-18. Also the longer version ANME-6 and PNME-9.
Cutting with Oxy / Acetylene
Note that the ANM-6 cutting nozzle range must not be used with the rent free acetylene cylinders or the smaller industrial DA cylinders because the acetylene flow is too great for the smaller DA cylinders. As an example BOC cylinder size "A" may be used with ANM-6 size 1/32", 3/64" plus the ANM-6 1/16" may be used for a short period only. the larger BOC cylinder size "H" may be used with ANM-6 up to size 3/32". Check with your acetylene supplier as the flow ratio is now quoted as 1/10 of the volume per hour which will restrict nozzle sizes able to be used.
Cutting with Oxy / Propane or Oxy / Propylene
The standard PNM-9 or PNM-18 cutting nozzles are typically not restricted by the fuel gas flow unless a small propane cylinder is being used, which freezes the cylinder reducing the evaporation, this is rare. Cutting upto 150mm thickness is possible with the restriction being made by the oxygen flow of the cutting attachment along with the length of the shank with cutting attachment, the reflective heat when cutting 150mm is high and becomes uncomfortable.
Other Applications
Gouging, one of the quickest and easiest methods to remove tack welds or weld defects on mild steel with either the AGNM or PGNM - Note the AGNM #13 must only be used with a full size industrial acetylene cylinder due to the DA flow required. AGNM #19 & AGNM #25 have to be used from multiple DA cylinders so as to provide sufficient flow.
The PGNM #13 and PGNM #19 may be used on the Type 5 cutting attachment.
Spot heating with the AHT heating heads, nothing can quite match the ability of oxy / acetylene to impart the heat so quickly into a component. The AHT cannot be used with any rent free DA cylinders. The AHT #25 must be used with a cylinder size "H" (BOC) as a minimum. AHT sizes #50 and #100 require multiple DA cylinders to feed a single nozzle.
There is the option of using the PHT (Oxy / propane doesn't have the same speed / effect as oxy / acetylene but it can still be useful especially if you only have a small size acetylene cylinder available, the oxy/propane option can fill a bigger heating gap as the flow is less of a limiting factor.
Super Heating
The Oxy / Propane comes into its own for "Super heating" with the 2290H super heating nozzles. These provide a very high heat output, sizes available are the H2290 - 1H, 2H, 3H, 4H & 5H. The 4H & 5H should be used with the 700mm or 900mm long heating necks due to the high heat output.
the H2290-3H may be used on the 500mm neck with the sizes 1H & 2H being able to be used comfortably on the shorter 300mm long necks. All the smaller sizes can of course be used on the long necks should you wish.
The Type 3 or Type 5 is my preferred shank of choice as it is what I used on a regular basis during my years with BOC plus it was the torch (Well a BOC Saffire 3) I was taught to weld with. I also used this shank to train others with regards to all the different processes that are possible, that's because this Type 5 shank is the most versatile shank available - you can do so much, just fit the correct mixer or attachment.
